Scatter cams

I have been reading, on the list, several discussions about cams, and I keep seeing mention of "scatter" cams. I would like to know what a scatter cam is, just out of curiosity.

It is an interesting concept developed by David Anton and David Vizard over a decade ago beause they realise that the A series engine is not a truly four cylinder job, but a two two-cylinder engine for the purpose of cam design.

The scatter pattern therefore maximises the horse power per cylinder by creating different timings for each pair of cylinders. This is called the SIMPLE SCATTER PATTERN.

They further developed the multi-scatter pattern which even David Vizard acknowledged in his book as "complex" because even the exhaust and intake timings are varied for each pair of cylinders.

What we need to understand is why it costs more than the simple cam.

The scatter cam apparently requires more time to grind as the machine has to be "reset to grind each set of lobes as if it were a separate camshaft".

Eric
